LAWRENCE IN ARABIA BY SCOTT ANDERSON
The "The Great Game" which was a cold war between Great Britain and its allies on one side and the Ottoman empire on another side is an astoundingly interesting episode of history. At the beginning of the 20th century, different political forces started building a new world order. To do it, they had to destroy the Ottoman Empire and divide it into dozens of independent nation-states. 'Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East' by Scott Anderson is one of the best books depicting the great struggles of several empires against each other.
Scott Anderson is a veteran war correspondent who has reported from various countries such as Egypt, Israel, Chechnya, Lebanon, Sudan, Bosnia, El Salvador, and other locations during the periods of military conflicts. The author is a regular contributor to several famous and popular media giants such as the New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Vanity Fair, and others.
'Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East' is a book about Edward T. Lawrence, an English spy whose mission was to organize and run Arab revolts against the Ottoman empire. Edward T. Lawrence, who was fluent in the Arabic language, makes contacts with influential tribes in Arabia such as Al-Husseini and Al-Saud, and through the military and financial aid of Great Britain, thee spy, support the Arab revolts against the Ottomans. The book also tells a lot about other spies that were very active during 'The Great Game'. Some of them are Max von Oppenheim, Kurt Prufer, Aaron Aaronsohn, William Yale, and many other personalities who played a huge role in the shaping of the Modern Middle East. This a book about the history of geopolitics. Hundred years ago, the world looked very different. Suddenly, it was reshaped, new states were artificially created and established, and some nations lost their land. Even though Edward T. Lawrence is the center of this book, you will find that the author pays equal attention to other important people as well.
I loved and enjoyed reading this wonderful book. It is not too big. Yet, it is very detailed and thorough. 'Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East' is a historic masterpiece that mentions and explains historic events of great importance and significance. I found this book very captivating and informative.
The work of Scott Anderson is a must-read for everyone interested in the history of the modern Middle East, Imperial wars between Great Britain, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. If you are interested in history, then, you should surely learn and study historic events at the beginning of the 20th century. Even though Edward T. Lawrence is an extraordinary personality, I don't think that he is the main point of this book. The main topic of this wonderful work is history.
