The Storied City: The Quest for The Timbuktu and the Fantastic Mission to Save its Past by Charlie EnglishNowadays, Mali is one of the world's poorest and most violent countries in the world. This country has been a violent war region for several decades. Nevertheless, history is immortal. We still remember the great wealth and prominence of its capital – Timbuktu. In 'The Storied City: The Quest for Timbuktu and the Fantastic Mission to Save Its Past', Charlie English tells about the picturesque history of this wonderful city.

Charlie English is a famous and successful writer and author who has held several significant positions at the Guardian, most recently, as head of international news. He is a member of the Royal Geographical Society. The author is based in London.

'The Storied City: The Quest for Timbuktu and the Fantastic Mission to Save Its Past' is a book about the history of Timbuktu, its cultural and scientific heritage, and its state in the modern world. During ancient times, Timbuktu was one of the richest and culturally developed cities in the world. It was the center of science. Mansa Musa, who is considered to be the wealthiest man ever lived in the world, was the ruler of Mali and his headquarters were based in Timbuktu. In the past, Mali had immense gold stocks, and gold was the only and main source of the country's wealth. Nowadays, Mali is a war-torn country with the highest levels of poverty and violence.

Apart from the history of Timbuktu, the author tells about the city's ancient manuscripts and the mission to save them during the invasion of religious radicals in the country. Even though the book is a work of history, there are a lot of thrilling elements in the book that will surely get you captivated.

I can say that I enjoyed reading this book. It tells a lot about the history and present days of Mali and Timbuktu. I learned that Timbuktu was an educational and cultural center of the world in the past. Some specialists call it 'African El Dorado', and I agree with this saying.

If you are interested in history, you will surely love this book. We know a lot about The Roman Empire, The Ottoman Empire, Mongols, and many other things. But our knowledge regarding the Mali Empire is very poor. This topic is not quite popular, and therefore, we neglect it. The history of Mali is a very interesting and informative historic subject. Even if you are not a fan of history, you will still enjoy reading this book due to the exciting and thrilling plot.
